🔔 Why this matters now
Two UAE changes in 2026 raised the stakes for your finance setup. Salaries now fall due on the 1st of each month, and e-invoicing has firm go-live dates for every business that issues B2B invoices.
Q: How soon after month end should the report arrive?
Within about ten working days is a sensible target for most startups. Later than that, the next payroll date is already close.
Q: Is a monthly report just the profit and loss statement?
No. The P&L shows profit. Cash, runway and upcoming tax dates sit on other pages, and for a startup those pages often matter more.

The one-page summary
Busy founders read the first page and skim the rest. So the first page has to carry the month on its own. If a founder reads nothing else, they should still know whether to worry.
Five numbers at the top
A strong summary opens with a handful of figures, each compared with last month and with budget. Cash in the bank, months of runway, revenue, gross margin and net burn cover most startups. A SaaS business may swap gross margin for monthly recurring revenue.
Each figure needs a comparison to mean anything. A cash balance of AED 1.8 million says little on its own. Next to last month’s AED 2.1 million and a budget of AED 2.0 million, it tells the founder that burn ran ahead of plan.
Commentary in plain words
Numbers without words leave the founder guessing. Under the figures, the CFO should explain in a few short sentences what moved and why. For example, revenue fell 8% because one large client delayed a renewal to next month.
Decisions needed this month
The last block lists the decisions the founder or board has to make. A hiring approval, a supplier payment plan, or a price change waiting for sign-off all belong here. This block is what gets a report acted on.
✅ Action to Take
Ask for a one-page summary with numbers, commentary and decisions, and read it before any other page. JaZaa’s outsourced CFO services build this summary page into every monthly reporting cycle.

The three statements, closed properly
Behind the summary sit the profit and loss statement, the balance sheet and the cash flow statement. They are only useful if the month has been closed properly first.
What a proper close means
A close matches every bank account, payment gateway and credit card to the ledger. It then adds accruals for costs incurred but not yet billed, and defers revenue that customers paid for in advance. Without those adjustments, profit swings from month to month for reasons that have nothing to do with performance.
The close also checks payroll against Wage Protection System records and sales against the VAT return. Gaps found in a monthly close take minutes to fix, while the same gaps found at year end can take weeks.
Accrual or cash basis
Ministerial Decision 114 of 2023 allows cash-basis financial statements only while revenue stays at or below AED 3 million. Above that, IFRS applies, and firms with revenue up to AED 50 million may use IFRS for SMEs. Even smaller startups gain from accrual reporting, because investors and auditors expect it.
The balance sheet deserves a look
Founders often skip the balance sheet. It shows unpaid customer invoices, money owed to suppliers, VAT payable or reclaimable, and loans. Problems in a startup usually show up here a month or two before they reach the P&L.
✅ Action to Take
Ask your finance team for the close date and a list of reconciled accounts each month. JaZaa’s accounting services close the books on a fixed monthly timetable and send the three statements with the summary.

Budget against actual
A budget turns the plan into numbers. The variance page shows where the month drifted from it, and whether the drift matters.
A worked example
Say the budget expected AED 500,000 of revenue and the month delivered AED 440,000. That is AED 60,000, or 12%, below plan. Marketing spend was budgeted at AED 80,000 and came in at AED 104,000, which is 30% over.
The report should not stop at those figures. It should say why each one moved. Was the revenue shortfall timing, with the deal closing next month? Or did a client leave? The answer changes what the founder does next.
Set a threshold for comment
Commenting on every line wastes time. Agree a threshold, such as any line more than 10% or AED 20,000 away from budget. The CFO explains those lines and leaves the rest.
Update the forecast, keep the budget
The budget stays fixed for the year, so variances stay meaningful. The forecast is different. It should move each month to reflect what the business now expects, and the report should show both.
✅ Action to Take
Agree a variance threshold with your CFO and ask for one line of explanation per breach. Our startup financial planning team builds the budget and rolling forecast that the variance page compares against.

Cash, runway and working capital
For most startups this is the page that matters most. A business can show a profit and still run short of cash, especially when customers pay late.
Runway in months
Runway is cash divided by average monthly net burn. With AED 2.4 million in the bank and net burn averaging AED 200,000 over the last three months, runway is 12 months. The report should show the trend over at least six months. A runway figure that drops faster than planned is an early warning.
A short-term cash forecast
Next to runway, a 13-week cash forecast shows the weeks ahead. It should mark the fixed dates clearly. Payroll leaves on or before the 1st of each month under Ministerial Resolution 340 of 2026. VAT payments fall due within 28 days of each period end.
Who owes you, and whom you owe
Receivables and payables ageing tables show invoices by how long they have been outstanding. A rising share of invoices past 60 days tells the founder to chase collections before it becomes a cash problem. On the payables side, the table shows which suppliers need paying first.
Gratuity belongs on this page too, as a liability that grows each month. Under Article 51 of the Labour Law, it builds up at 21 days of basic salary per year for the first five years of service. It is paid when an employee leaves, often with little warning.
✅ Action to Take
Ask for runway, a 13-week forecast and ageing tables on one page. JaZaa’s CoCFO dashboard shows cash flow and AR and AP ageing alongside the income statement, balance sheet and budget tracking.

A short call can show which pages to add first.

KPIs that fit your model
Generic KPIs fill pages without helping anyone. The right ones depend on how the business makes money, and they should not change every month.
Subscription businesses
For SaaS, the report should show monthly recurring revenue, churn and net revenue retention. David Skok, who writes on SaaS metrics, uses a lifetime value to acquisition cost ratio of about 3 to 1 as a working target. He also suggests a CAC payback of 5 to 12 months.
Burn multiple belongs here too. David Sacks defines it as net burn divided by net new ARR. If a startup burned AED 540,000 last quarter and added AED 400,000 of net new ARR, the burn multiple is 1.35. That falls in his “great” band of 1.0 to 1.5.
Trading and e-commerce businesses
For businesses that sell goods, contribution margin per order matters more than recurring revenue. Inventory days, return rates and repeat purchase rates also belong on the page. Each tells the founder whether growth is adding profit or simply adding volume. A trading business with 90 inventory days has three months of stock costs sitting in its warehouse. The report should show whether that figure is rising.
Keep the list short
Six to eight KPIs is plenty for most startups. Show each one as a trend over at least six months, with a target line. A KPI with no target cannot tell anyone whether the month was good.
✅ Action to Take
Agree your KPI list once and keep it stable for at least two quarters. A fractional CFO who sets and tracks startup KPIs can pick the measures that suit your model and add them to each report.

The UAE tax and compliance calendar
The last page of a good UAE monthly report looks forward. It lists every tax and regulatory date coming up, with the amount due where known.
VAT, corporate tax and Small Business Relief
VAT returns and payment fall due within 28 days of each tax period end. Corporate tax returns and payment are due within nine months of the financial year end. Small Business Relief now runs to tax periods ending on or before 31 December 2029 under Ministerial Decision 131 of 2026. It applies only while revenue stays within AED 3 million and has to be elected in the return.
VAT credits with an expiry date
Federal Decree-Law 16 of 2025 took effect on 1 January 2026. Excess recoverable input VAT must now be used or reclaimed within five years of the end of the period it arose in. Older balances caught by this rule can still be claimed in a transition window that closes on 31 December 2026. The report should track the VAT credit balance and flag any amount close to its limit.
Every one of these dates depends on good records. Under the Corporate Tax Law, businesses must keep their records for seven years after the end of the tax period. The monthly close should file supporting documents as it goes.
E-invoicing and audit dates
Firms below AED 50 million in revenue must appoint an e-invoicing Accredited Service Provider by 31 March 2027 and go live on 1 July 2027. Audit dates belong on the calendar as well. Ministerial Decision 84 of 2025 requires audited financial statements for every Qualifying Free Zone Person, for firms with revenue above AED 50 million, and for all tax groups.
✅ Action to Take
Add a rolling 12-month compliance calendar to the back of every report. Our corporate tax consulting team for UAE startups can map the dates and amounts for your entities.
Common Questions
Short answers to what UAE founders ask about a CFO outsourcing monthly report.
It is the monthly pack an outsourced CFO sends after closing the books. It covers a summary, the three financial statements, budget variance, cash and runway, KPIs and upcoming tax dates.
Long enough to cover the six pages above, and short enough to read in 20 minutes. The one-page summary should stand on its own.
No. The report depends on accurate daily records. Most startups keep a bookkeeping service that records transactions daily and add the CFO above it.
About ten working days is a sensible target. A report that arrives later is too close to the next payroll and VAT dates to change much.
Monthly for management. Many boards meet quarterly, so the CFO can combine three monthly reports into a board pack.
The budget is fixed for the year. The forecast updates each month to show what the business now expects.
Yes, if the monthly close is done well. Clean reconciliations through the year make the year-end audit faster, and JaZaa's audit support team prepares schedules for your auditor.
JaZaa's published fractional CFO retainers run from AED 15,000 to AED 35,000 a month. The figure depends on entities, transaction volume and how much board or investor work is involved.
It should. Under Federal Decree-Law 16 of 2025, excess input VAT expires five years after the period it arose in, so the balance needs tracking.
No. Keep the same six to eight KPIs for at least two quarters so the trends mean something.
Yes. A virtual CFO working from your current software can build the monthly report on top of the system you already run.
More UAE deadlines now fall inside the month. Payroll runs on the 1st, older VAT credits must be claimed by the end of 2026, and e-invoicing reaches smaller firms in July 2027. A monthly report that looks forward as well as back lets a founder see each date coming. Over the next year, the gap will widen between startups that read their numbers in time to act and those that read them after the fact.
